DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF SECURITY GUARD

1.       THE BASIC FUNCTIONS OF A GUARD

The basic functions of a guard provide for the activities by which the General Orders are applied.

1.1               Patrol the facility
1.2               Record activities and observations
1.3               Report unusual incidents or conditions
1.4               Control and record visitors
1.5               Control access to restricted areas
1.6               Control and redundant recording of materials movement-outgoing and incoming
1.7               Control vehicular and pedestrian traffic and oversight of parking spaces
1.8               Control and record key handling, use and safekeeping
1.9               Control wastage of materials, utilities and consumable resources
1.10            Control hazardous materials and conditions
1.11            Gather information to apprise management of the condition of the facility
1.12            Public relations and assistance
1.13            Enforce company regulations
1.14            Escort valuables being transported
1.15            Man the facility’s communications network
1.16            React systematically to all emergency situations
1.17            Investigate security incidents
1.18            Help in maintaining peace and  order
1.19            Proper turnover at the end of his tour of duty

2.       PATROLLING
Is an activity of a guard where he continuously observes the surrounding of the facility for any unusual situation or condition that can be inimical to its security and safety.

The area to be patrolled is basically called the Area of Responsibility (AOR)

2.1               The Components of an Area of Responsibility

2.1.1          Critical Point (CP), Critical point is resource whose loss or damage is detrimental to the organization. It is also a condition which can provide opportunity for risks to occur.     
2.1.2          Area Control Point (ACP). Area control point is a point in the AOR where the guard can have a Maximum sensory coverage and reasonable physical control of the situation.
2.1.3          Fixed Area Control Point (FACP) is a point set on a particular location in the area of responsibility, from where the guard shall record his location at a particular time.
2.1.4          Transient Area Control Point (TACP) is the actual location of the guard while on patrol.
2.1.5          Control Area (CA) it is the area surrounding the TACP. Experiments conducted show that a guard can be physically effective within a radius of 50 meters without obstruction. The area is also called area of liability because it is the area  where a guard can control a subject within his capability.


2.2               The Objectives of a Patrol

2.2.1          To familiarize the guard with his area of responsibility (AOR) and its condition before and after his tour of duty and to establish his knowledge of its conditions.
2.2.2          For the guard to show his presence in his area of responsibility and provide deterrence to possible intruders or employees intending to commit violations.
2.2.3          For the guard to ensure that his AOR is in order during  his tour of duty based on what was established in the familiarization patrol.
2.2.4          For the guard to notify and report unusual situations.
2.2.5          To gather information or evidence during an investigation.
